Snow Advisory Gas Meter & Air Vents

Keep  meters and side wall appliance vents clear of snow

ADVISORY BULLETIN:  Dangers of Abnormal Snow and Ice Build-up on Gas meters and regulators and Customer-owned exhaust and combustion air vents for gas appliances.

Accumulations of snow and ice from heavy snows, ice storms, snow and ice falling from rooftops, snow removal by shoveling and other equipment, faulty gutters, etc. may cause damage or failure to meters, regulators and piping due to stress conditions.

Abnormal snow and ice build-up also may block gas appliance exhaust and combustion air vents (especially those side wall vents exiting close to ground level) causing appliance failure as well as build up of Carbon Monoxide.

Consider the following guidelines during these winter conditions:
1) Know where your gas meter is located as well as any gas appliance vents.

2) Pay attention to snow or ice related conditions that may cause problems with these components.

3) Keep these components clear of snow and ice.  Exercise caution when clearing snow away from these components. Where possible, use a broom instead of a shovel to prevent damage.

4) If any gas odor is present or gas appliances are not functioning properly,
contact Morton Utilities at 263-5361 or 266-6666 after hours.
