Public Awareness Survey – 2010
A customer survey was included with the September utility bill requesting feedback of our Natural Gas Safety Program. Over 6200 surveys were sent to Morton utility customers. The response from customers was exceptional with 1179 (19%) survey responses returned. The survey included the following questions:
Question 1.
Have you seen any information (provided by the Village of Morton Gas Department) about natural gas and gas safety ?
Question 2.
Do you know what natural gas smells like and what appliances in your home use natural gas ?
Question 3.
Do you know what to do and whom to call if you suspect a natural gas leak is present in or around your home or place of business ?
Question 4.
Do you know what the JULIE (Illinois One-Call System) is ?

Question 1 ...
74% of responses indicated they have seen information from the Village of Morton Gas Dept.
Most (807) remembered seeing information with the utility bill and many (156) have seen information on Comcast Channel 22.
· The Village of Morton provides Gas Safety Information in the following ways:
1) Minimum of twice year with utility bill
2) This information may also be found on www.morton-il.gov
3) JULIE and other information is broadcasted hourly on Comcast Channel 22
4) Gas safety information is provided with new customer packets.
Question 2 ...
96% of the responses indicated that they knew that natural gas smells like ... “Rotten eggs” and
indicated that they knew which appliances in their home use natural gas.
· Gas appliances may include: (furnace, water heater, clothes dryer,
space heaters, fireplaces, gas grills)
Question 3 ...
86% of responses knew who to call if they suspect a natural gas leak is present.
· For the fastest response, call your provider of natural gas. In Morton, the Village of Morton provides natural gas to over 90% of the residents and commercial customers.
· Ameren-CILCO may be the gas provider in the following areas:
1) Part of Oak Lawn Mobile Estates 2) Jay Ave. 3) Schwartz Acres Sub. 4) Ossami Lake Sub. 5) Woodlawn Sub.
6) Part of N. Morton Ave. including: Northmoor and Lynnwood Courts

94% of the responses indicated that they knew about JULIE (the Illinois One-Call System).
